New York LAP Roundup

This week, we’re focusing on the New York State Bar Association’s Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP). The LAP “provides education and confidential assistance to lawyers, judges, law school students, and immediate family members who are affected by the problem of substance abuse, stress, or depression. Its goal is to assist in the prevention, early identification and intervention of problems that can affect professional conduct and quality of life.” The LAP is managed by the Lawyer Assistance Committee.

The LAP’s confidential, voluntary, and free services include:

  • Interventions
  • Treatment plan advice
  • Referrals
  • Information resources
  • Education and training on substance abuse and stress management

Resources on the site include the Judges Assistance Program brochure; recovery stories, wellness articles, information for families, and links to helpful websites.

LAP offers a helpline for attorneys, judges and students at 1-800-255-0569. Hon. Sarah L. Krauss chairs the Lawyer Assistance Committee. Patricia Spataro is Director of the LAP.
